The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Renson Ingonga has directed the DCI to conduct “thorough” investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death of the late Beatrice Wairimu Mbugua alias Betty Bayo.
In a statement on Thursday, December 18, DPP Ingonga said that he had received a formal complaint from the immediate family of the late gospel singer, questioning the death of their daughter.
“The complaint raises concerns and suspicions regarding the circumstances surrounding her death, noting, among other issues, that the deceased had no known underlying health conditions and that the family has allegedly been denied access to the post-mortem report,” the DPP says.
This comes after the mother of the late Betty Bayo, Joyce Wairimu, wrote to the DPP, seeking a public inquest into the death.
Betty died on November 10, 2025 while receiving treatment at the Kenyatta National Hospital in Nairobi. At the time of her death, a family spokesperson, flanked by the singer’s husband and friends, said she had succumbed to leukemia.

However, Betty’s mother alleges foul play in her death. Through Omenke Andeje & Company Advocates, Wairimu said that the family was going through unbearable pain in accepting the fact that the deceased, who had never exhibited any illness would just die mysteriously.
In his letter to the DPP, Wairimu said that the family suspects an evil hand in the death of Betty, based on the following primary grounds;
- The deceased did not have a history of any underlying condition.
- The deceased family was denied an autopsy report.
- The deceased was hurriedly buried to conceal some facts that may have led to her death.
- The family was denied medical records and information of what the deceased was being treated for.
“The family thus express their utmost disdain, and thus demands for you to hereby direct the Inspector general to urgently move with speed and, institute an inquest into the circumstances surrounding the death of Beatrice Wairimu Mbugua-alias Betty Bayo,” the request reads in part.
