Drug abuse among youth hits alarming levels as Ministry targets 10 counties

The Ministry of Health has raised fresh concerns over the alarming rise in drug and substance abuse among the youth, revealing that one in every eleven young people aged between 15 and 24 is currently using a substance.

A recent survey conducted by the Ministry between November 2024 and February 2025 has identified ten counties as high-risk zones for youth drug abuse. These counties include Garissa, Kakamega, Kericho, Kisumu, Laikipia, Machakos, Meru, Mombasa, Nakuru, and Uasin Gishu.

Public Health and Professional Standards Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni expressed deep concern over the growing interest in substance use, warning that urgent action is needed to reverse the trend before it escalates into a national disaster.

The report identifies alcohol, miraa, tobacco, cannabis, and prescription drugs particularly painkillers as the most commonly abused substances among the youth.

The issue extends beyond teenagers, with about 1.5 million young working-class Kenyans aged 25 to 35 also affected. Experts warn that drug use within this productive age group is hindering workplace performance and could have long-term consequences if left unaddressed.

In response, the Ministry of Health is preparing to launch a nationwide anti-drug abuse campaign, starting with the ten high-risk counties. The initiative will focus on educating the youth about the dangers of drug use and promoting rehabilitation as a key solution.

Students in institutions of higher learning, especially those currently on long holidays, have also been cautioned to stay away from drugs and use their time productively.
