Eldoret: Man accused of conning job seekers ordered to refund KSh12 million

A court in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County, has ordered a man accused of defrauding job seekers more than KSh12 million to start the process of refunding his victims.

Joseph Kipkoech Keino, accused of defrauding victims out of their money with the promise of securing well-paying jobs for them in Australia, was ordered to start refunding the victims by Eldoret Principal Magistrate Cherono Kesse.

Magistrate Cherono directed that Keino deposit the first installment of KSh150,000 by September 29, 2025, failure to which she will cancel his KSh3 million bond with immediate effect.

Among the 18 victims who allegedly fell prey to Keino’s antics include university and college students, and taxi operators. The court was told that he deceived them with hotel jobs in Australia, with a monthly salary of KSh900,000 each.

According to court documents, he obtained between KSh300,000 to KSh1.8 million from each victim on diverse dates between March and July 2024.

He was first charged in September 2024, denied the charges and was released on a bond of KSh3 million with a surety of similar amount.

Keino will not have to return to the court in October 6, 2025, to confirm whether he has complied with the directive or not. If he will not have complied with the orders, the court will cancel his bail and be locked at Eldoret DK Remand Prison.
