A 56-year-old suspect of child trafficking was on Tuesday, April 7 afternoon formally arraigned in court following his arrest in Kiminini, Trans Nzoia County.
Gilbert Nyabuto Musome was charged with the offense of trafficking in persons contrary to Section 3(1), (2) and (5) of the Counter-Trafficking in Persons Act, 2011 and false representation contrary to Section 55 of the National Intelligence Service Act.
The suspect was released on a cash bail of KSh40,000 or an alternative of a KSh80,000 bond, with surety of a similar amount.
He was arrested following a tip-off from members of the public after he aroused suspicion at Nyamira Village.
Police officers responded to reports of an unfamiliar man seen in the company of a young boy. Upon arrival, they found Nyabuto in the company of a 10-year-old boy.
The suspect allegedly introduced himself as a ‘Deputy Commissioner’ with the National Intelligence Service and presented an identification document bearing that rank and an accompanying service number.
However, a search conducted on a backpack in his possession revealed assorted academic documents belonging to different individuals, as well as blank fake Kenya Defence Forces calling letters, raising suspicion over his activities.
When questioned about the child, the suspect claimed he was assisting him to secure accommodation. Both the suspect and the minor were escorted to Kiminini Police Station for further processing. The child was later positively identified by his mother who hails from Salona area, and has since been safely reunited with her.
