Family and friends gather as emotions run high at Albert Ojwang’s requiem mass

Friends and family gathered on the morning of July 2, 2025 at the Ridgeways Baptist Church, along Kiambu road, for a requiem mass to celebrate the life of slain blogger and teacher, Album Ojwang, who died while in police custody in June.

The polished-brown casket carrying Ojwang’s remains arrived at the church in a hearse at 10:00 A.M, accompanied by close family, led by his father, Meshack Ojwang’. Grief and sorrow ran high as mourners converged in their hundreds to pay their last respects.

With words of encouragement from clergy reverberating in the air, heartfelt tributes from family painted a picture of the kind of person Ojwang was.

“He has been an amazing person. He was calm yet courageous. He taught me courage,” Nevninna Onyango, Ojwang’s wife, said. “It is heavy on both my son and me. I lack words to express my grief,” she added.

“Albert cared for us all. He would call us very late at night to find out if we had eaten. I am heartbroken,” a sobbing Eucabeth Ojwang, Albert’s mother, said.

In attendance was former Cabinet Secretary for Public Service and Human Capital Development, Justin Muturi, who decried the state’s response to voices of dissent.

“We cannot continue losing lives like this. We must say as a country, never again! We must not silence these voices, yet we claim to be a democratic country,” Muturi stated.

This comes amid calls from the public as well as human rights defenders demanding justice to be served and all responsible parties to be held accountable. So far, two police officers, Central Police Station OCS, Samson Taalam, and Police Constable, James Mukhwana, have been charged over the murder, in an ongoing trial.

The police in their initial statement alleged that Ojwang committed suicide, while inside the police cell; a possibility that was ruled out by the Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA), after an autopsy report.

Ojwang’s body will be flown to Homabay on Wednesday, July 3, ahead of his final burial rites scheduled for Friday, July 4, at their rural home in Kakwonyo, Kabondo Kasipul.
