The family of Daniel Nderitu, a Nakuru resident who was allegedly shot by police officers in London area of Nakuru West during a confrontation between the police and residents, has come forward to condemn what they term as an unjust killing of their loved one.
With the autopsy scheduled for today (Thursday, June 12) to determine the cause of death, the family says he was short twice.
“The police came and claimed that he was in possession of marijuana. When he tried to resist, he was shot on the back. They handcuffed him and shot in the air, then they shot him again on the lower chest,” Patrick Kariuki, a resident, told TV47.
Burial plans are underway at his home, three days after his demise. The 47-year-old who was the family’s breadwinner depended on mining jobs to fend for his family of four young children.
“He was so full of life. In 2023, he lost his wife, and his child too last year. The government should stop killing us. Patrick was innocent,” said Njeri, Nderitu’s sister.
As the family continues to cry for justice to be served, police officers patrolled the area for the better part of yesterday to prevent residents from holding demonstrations in demand of justice for Nderitu.
Four witnesses have so far recorded statements with the Police Oversight Authority (IPOA), as the family seeks accountability over the death of their kin.
