Five petrol stations flagged for selling adulterated fuel in EPRA crackdown

The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has flagged five petrol stations across Kenya for selling adulterated or export-bound fuel in the local market following a nationwide inspection conducted between January and March 2026.

According to the regulator, a total of 2,713 fuel quality tests were carried out at 758 petroleum sites across the country.

Of these, 753 stations met the required standards, while five stations, representing 0.66 per cent, were found to be non-compliant.

In a public notice, EPRA said the inspections are part of its mandate under the Petroleum Act 2019 to safeguard consumers and maintain fuel quality standards in the country.

“The Authority undertakes a program of continuous monitoring of the quality of petroleum motor fuels on sale, transport and storage throughout the country,” EPRA stated.

Among the stations cited is Asis Energy Filling Station in Kapkayo, Elgeyo Marakwet County, which was found selling super petrol and diesel containing high sulphur and adulterated with domestic kerosene.

The regulator said the station has since reopened after upgrading its products and paying taxes and penalties amounting to KSh101,638.

In Wajir County, a suspected illegal fuel site in Habaswein was discovered with diesel containing high sulphur. EPRA noted that the fuel was impounded and the matter is still in court.

Another case was reported in Kwale County, where an illegal fuel site in Matuga was found with diesel meant for export. The fuel was also impounded pending court proceedings.

Meanwhile, Green Wells Energies Kisumu CBD Service Station was cited for selling kerosene meant for export in the local market. EPRA said the station reopened after paying penalties totaling KSh435,100.

Plateau Filling Station in Murungaru, Nyandarua County, was also flagged for selling diesel adulterated with domestic kerosene and has since been closed.

EPRA has urged members of the public to report suspected fuel adulteration through its hotline, emphasizing that strict enforcement will continue to protect consumers and ensure compliance in the petroleum sector.
