Five residents from a village in Tot Division, Elgeyo Marakwet, have voluntarily surrendered illegal firearms to security agencies as part of an ongoing disarmament exercise.

The five individuals from Sagat Village in Marich Sub-Location surrendered three AK47 rifles on Monday, September 15.

A police report says that one AK47 rifle had a magazine containing eight rounds of ammunition; and another had a magazine containing five rounds of ammunition.

“All weapons have been secured pending further administrative action. The National Police Service commends these individuals for this bold step and appreciates the support of local leaders and communities in advancing peace and security in the Kerio Valley,” a police report says.

Last week, two bandits identified as Meshack Kibor and Branson Tarus surrendered to the police in Kabetwa, Elgeyo Marakwet. They handed over two AK47 rifles, 21 bullets, and police uniform.

The National Police Service is further encouraging members of the public to emulate this gesture by surrendering any illegal arms in their possession and by sharing information that may assist in disarmament and crime prevention.
