Detectives in Nairobi have arrested five suspects who are believed to be behind a notorious syndicate that has been targeting mobile money (M-Pesa) shop attendants.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), an investigation was launched following numerous complaints reported by mobile money shop attendants whose floats had been swept clean through fraudulent tricks by the notorious criminal ring operating across counties.
The investigations are being carried out by the DCI’s Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau detectives jointly with the Operation Action Team.
On Wednesday, May 21, the officers rounded up the five suspects. The susepcts have been identified as; Geoffrey Kasamani Chula (resident of Munyaka in Eldoret), Stephen Mokaya Nyangoya (resident of Tiwani, Kitale), Paul Nganga Kariuki (from Hawaii, Eldoret), Teresia Muthoni Mwaniki (from Kimumu, Eldoret) and Cedela Akoth Oruya (from Kibos, Kisumu).
The motor vehicle Reg. No KBW 441J make Toyota Premio in which they were driving in was also intercepted and impounded.
Upon search inside the vehicle, the officers recovered several SIM cards — registered under different names — and assorted mobile phones.
The suspects were escorted to Ruai Police Station where one of the reports was filed, and other stations with similar incidents have been contacted to probe the suspects further.
