Four people have been confirmed dead after a building collapsed at Blue Estate, Shauri Moyo in Kamukunji, Nairobi County, on Monday, March 16.
Nairobi North Sub-County County Commissioner Simon Osumba says that four others have been rescued so far, one of whom sustained minor injuries and was taken to hospital.
The number of individuals who may still be trapped under the rubbles remains unknown, Osumba adds.
The victims were removing steel bars and other construction materials from the abandoned structure when it gave way.
The ill-fated building had been earmarked for demolition as it sat along the Nairobi River riparian corridor under the Nairobi River Regeneration Project.
Rescue efforts — conducted by the Kenya Defence Forces, National Police Service, National Government Administrative Officers and the Kenya Red Cross — are currently ongoing.
The Office of the County Commissioner, Nairobi North, says it is actively monitoring the situation and will provide updates as rescue and assessment operations progress.
