Media personality Gladys Gachanja known for her poise and excellent reporting skills has recounted a deeply emotional account of her struggles as a single mother and career woman that has resonated with Kenyans.
Speaking on her new digital show ‘Curveballs by GG‘, she recounted a harrowing experience when she was informed by her neighbour that her nanny was abusive to her son.

“She told me, I have been watching this nanny and the way she handles your child and I’m not comfortable. My own nanny tells me the way she handles your child is not the best and that child is afraid to tell you because of the threats,” narrated Gladys.
This news was broken during the 2017 electioneering period, the busiest time for a Kenyan journalist. “I have this reality that my help has to go because my son cannot live in this reality. Catch here is? I am a single mother,” she further added.

She proceeds and narrates how she had to let go of the nanny after she discovered the son had been injured behind his ear by the nanny.
“I remember calling the help to the living room and it is like she already knew what I was going to tell her. I remember her pulling and tagging and I just told her you need to leave my house.”
She faced a harrowing dilemma: stay home to protect her son or report for duty and safeguard her job. “If I call the office one more time saying I don’t have a nanny, I don’t know what will happen to my job,” she divulged. “But I cannot leave my son on his own.”
Luckily, she has a friend who readily took in her son and stayed with him during the period she was away for election coverage.
All these however, took a toll on her at work which was quickly noted by her bosses. She was castigated on several instances and even termed “lazy”.
She urges colleagues and people in authority to be more empathetic at the work place because you really never know what one is going through in their private life
