Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga has stepped down from the position of Vice Chairperson, the Council of Governors, following his controversial remarks on Raila Odinga’s death.
This was after a public outcry as leaders and Kenyans condemned the Nyeri Governor for making utterances that appeared to celebrate Raila’s death.
Speaking during a press briefing on October 22, 2025, the Nyeri Governor apologized to the nation, Raila Odinga’s family, the ODM fraternity, and the Luo community, saying his remarks were not meant to celebrate the late former Prime Minister’s death and expressed regret for any harm caused.
“I want to sincerely apologize to our mourning nation, to the family of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, Mama Ida, Senator Oburu Odinga, the Luo community, the ODM party and the entire nation,” said Governor Kahiga.
His statement emerged a few minutes after ODM chairperson Gladys Wanga sought his removal from the office of Vice Chairperson, Council of Governors.
