The Mombasa County Department of Health has deployed an investigative team to Migadini area, where 4 people lost their lives after suffering from a mysterious disease.
The bodies were identified, and deaths occurred between July 9 and 14, 2025.
The victims are said to have exhibited similar symptoms before their deaths, showing signs such as swollen boils on their bodies.
“Mtu anafura hivi kama ndovu…anatoa harufu mbaya, hatuelewi ni ugonjwa gani,” Maulid Hassan, a resident said.
All the deceased are said to have been living in Swahili-style houses within the Matangini area, with their bodies discovered days after their death.
“Baada ya kama masaa mawili hivi pia tukapata habari tena kuna mwingine pia yuko kwa nyumba, kwa sababu harufu ndio inafanya watu wanajua,” Michael Nyamai, another resident said.
It was found that on Wednesday, July 9, a 91-year-old woman died at home. Community members confirmed that, in addition to old age, she had an unspecified chronic disease.
Meanwhile, a 57-year-old man was found dead in his house on Monday, July 14. He had been on follow-up at Port-Reitz Sub-County Hospital for various chronic medical conditions, while on the same day, a 69-year-old man was found dead in his home. His body was discovered in the early stages of decomposition and he is reported to have been asthmatic.
Additionally, a 55-year-old man was found dead in his home, also on the 14, in the early stages of decomposition. He is known to have had chronic illnesses and had recently been treated for dengue fever.
Bodies of the deceased were moved to Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary, awaiting post-mortem examination and further evaluation.
