Homa Bay County has intensified efforts to promote early breast cancer detection through a sensitization walk aimed at encouraging more women to go for regular screening.
The initiative, held as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month under the theme “Every Story Is Unique, Every Journey Matters,” seeks to address fear and stigma that often delay diagnosis.
Speaking during the flag-off, County Executive Committee Member for Health Grace Osewe revealed that only nine per cent of women in the county have undergone breast cancer screening, warning that many seek medical attention when the disease is already in its advanced stages.
Osewe said the county has integrated cancer services into its healthcare system to promote early identification and improve treatment outcomes.
Meanwhile, Aga Khan Hospital Kisumu Project Manager Kennedy Mulama said the institution was working with the county to strengthen cancer care through screening, training healthcare workers and community health promoters.
Mulama added that the hospital had recently supported the construction of an oncology centre at Homa Bay Teaching and Referral Hospital to enhance access to cancer treatment.
