How police, military raided my house, cut off power and CCTV cameras – Bobi Wine

Uganda opposition presidential candidate Robert Kyagulani, popularly known as Bobi Wine, has broken his silence after claims of police breaking into his home and abducting him rented the air across the East African region on Friday, January 16 evening.

In a lengthy statement on his X account, Wine who is contesting on the National Unity Platform ticket said that both the military and police in vehicles and helicopters raided his home in Magere, Wakiso District, before switching off power, destroyed CCTV cameras in the compound.

“I want to confirm that I managed to escape from them. Currently, I am not at home, although my wife and other family members remain under house arrest,” Wine says, confirming earlier statement by police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke, who dismissed the reports that he had been arrested and taken to an unknown location.

According to the pop star-cum-politician, the police are currently looking for him everywhere, “and I am trying my best to keep safe”.

“I understand that there has been great concern and speculation regarding my whereabouts. Please understand this is the context of a nationwide internet shutdown. Given the commotion that happened at our house at night, and given that no one is allowed to access the house, our neighbours concluded that they had succeeded in abducting us and spread the news.”

Fake results

Bobi Wine has also maintained that the provisional results being announced by the Electoral Commission (EC) are not the true reflection of the people of Uganda.

“I reiterate our COMPLETE REJECTION of the fake results Byabakama is reading. In addition to the ballot stuffing, the military take-over of the election, the detention of our leaders and polling officials, and other electoral offences, their results have zero backing!”

Bobi Wine also alleges that several Ugandans have been killed by security forces after attempting to peacefully demonstrate against the election results.

“The people of Uganda have the right to protest in defence of their sovereign right to determine a government of their choice – not the kind of criminality we’re witnessing,” he added.

President Yoweri Museveni of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Party, is currently enjoying an insurmountable lead, having garnered 7,643,778 votes so far, representing 71.88% of the valid votes cast.

Wine, vying on a National Unity Platform (NUP) Party ticket, comes a distant second with 2,601,150 votes, representing 24.46% of the valid votes.
