IEBC declares DCP’s Sammy Ngotho winner after landslide victory in the Ol Kalou Parliamentary by- elections

Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) candidate Sammy Douglas Waweru Kamau has been elected the new Member of Parliament for Ol Kalou Constituency after securing an overwhelming victory in the by-election held on Thursday, July 16.

Official results released by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) showed Kamau garnering 35,440 votes, far ahead of his closest challenger, United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate Samuel Muchina Nyagah, who received 5,450 votes.

Jubilee Party aspirant Wilson Mwaniki Kigwa finished a distant third with 198 votes, while the remaining candidates shared a relatively small portion of the vote.

Stephen Wanyoike Waithaka of the National Liberal Party (NLP) garnered 103 votes, Timothy Kamau Kariuki of PM secured 51, Edwin Kariiri Muchiri of PNU received 28, Abdifatah Hussein Abdullahi of FPK managed 19, Edward Mathenge Mwaniki of KMM got 16, and Rachael Wangui Njoroge of PDP polled 11 votes.

The declaration was made by Returning Officer Antony Njiraine after the completion of tallying across the constituency.

The outcome brings to an end a hotly contested race that had drawn significant political interest, with analysts viewing it as an early test of strength between President William Ruto’s UDA and the DCP led by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

Ol Kaou MP elect Sammy Douglas Waweru Kamau.

Addressing supporters shortly after he was declared the winner, Kamau urged residents and his political rivals to put the election behind them and work together for the constituency’s development.

“Asiyekubali kushindwa si mshindani. Leo ni mimi, na kesho bado ni nyinyi. 2027 bado ni mimi. All the ideas that you had, I listened to you, and you had great, brilliant ideas we can always share for the betterment of Ol Kalou; we can always engage,” he said.

Kamau emphasized that leadership should be guided by collaboration rather than political divisions, noting that every contestant had contributed ideas that could benefit the constituency.

The victory was also celebrated by DCP supporters, who described the outcome as a significant political milestone for the party.

Sammy Ngotho praised his party leader Rigathi Gachagua, saying the result demonstrated the party’s growing influence.

“To my party leader, His Excellency Rigathi Gachagua, the rejected stone became the cornerstone. They may have impeached you, but today you have made a statement that the king of the mountain, the party of choice, the man who will lead our country into the future is none other than Rigathi Wa Gachagua,” he said.

The Ol Kalou by-election had attracted nationwide attention, with senior political leaders from both camps actively campaigning for their respective candidates.

Kamau’s decisive win is expected to further shape the country’s political landscape as parties begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election.
