The Kenya Wildlife Service Veterinary and Capture Unit is currently spearheading a significant rewilding initiative at Tundra Conservancy and Kambi Msituni in Laikipia County.

This carefully coordinated exercise involves relocating five giraffes from Solio Ranch Conservancy to Tundra Conservancy, and two giraffes from Lolmarik Conservancy to Kambi Msituni.

Through these strategic movements, KWS aims to repopulate underutilized habitats, ensuring the long-term survival of species by placing them in more suitable environments, while also relieving pressure on overpopulated areas.

Relocation is a vital conservation tool that not only helps balance ecosystems but also mitigates human-wildlife conflict and reduces the risks of illegal off-take for bushmeat.

“By moving wildlife closer to protected areas with strong management frameworks, we promote coexistence and safeguard both local communities and our iconic species,” KWS says.

This initiative is firmly aligned with the KWS 2024–2028 Strategic Plan, which emphasizes habitat expansion and strengthening partnerships with conservation stakeholders to secure the future of Kenya’s wildlife heritage.
