Iraola hints at changes ahead of Liverpool’s Villarreal Champions League clash

Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola warned he may be forced to field an unexpected starting lineup for Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League clash against Villarreal at Anfield, prioritizing physical freshness amidst a grueling fixture list and increasing squad injuries.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Iraola revealed that recent fitness setbacks have drastically altered his selection strategy. Right-back Jeremie Frimpong faces a spell on the sidelines after picking up a significant muscle injury against Brentford, while midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai suffered a recurrence of a thigh issue in the same match.

Although midfielder Ryan Gravenberch returns from a European suspension, Iraola emphasized that heavy workloads across four games in 10 days mean the starting eleven may look different than anticipated.

“I am thinking of putting out the best starting XI I can, but maybe it’s not the one you are thinking because some players are not fresh enough,” Iraola noted, hinting squad depth will play a critical role.

Addressing the relentless media coverage surrounding playmaker Florian Wirtz, Iraola praised the German international’s recent performances. Wirtz became the first Premier League player in over five years to create nine or more open-play chances in a single game during Liverpool’s win at Brentford, repeating a feat last accomplished by Sadio Mané.

Iraola acknowledged the constant scrutiny, adding that while the player is over-scrutinized daily, his impact in key moments remains vital to the team’s balance.

Reflecting on reaching 10 matches in charge of the Reds, Iraola admitted the non-stop calendar leaves virtually zero opportunity to evaluate his start.

He noted that the environment contrasts sharply with his early days at Bournemouth, where poor initial results gave way to long-term stability. At Liverpool, the rapid pace forces the coaching staff to learn on the fly and adapt to mid-game disruptions without time to dwell on milestones.

The match also marks a personal milestone for Iraola as he faces Villarreal manager Íñigo Pérez. The two Spanish coaches share a long history, having played together at Athletic Club before Pérez served as Iraola’s assistant.

Iraola recalled attempting to bring Pérez with him to Bournemouth in 2023, a move blocked due to work permit issues that ultimately paved the way for Pérez to take charge at Rayo Vallecano.

Meanwhile, defender Ronald Araújo drew praise for his tactical flexibility. Having joined on loan from Barcelona, Araújo has filled in at right-back during structural shortages.

Iraola praised Araújo’s immediate impact and experience, while also singling out Victor Muñoz for his adaptability after filling in at right-back against Brentford.
