Calls for justice and improved security have intensified following the killing of two people, including a trader, along Nairobi’s busy Latema Road.
In a statement, Commissioner at the Commission of Admistrative Justice Charles Jaguar said he responded to a distress call from traders after the incident, which occurred in the early hours of Friday at around 3:00 a.m. The victims included vendor Brian Muendo, who was reportedly attacked while going about his work.
Jaguar termed the incident “deeply concerning,” noting that the victims were peacefully earning a living at the time of the attack.
“It is troubling that such violence can be meted on individuals simply trying to make an honest living,” he said.
The commissioner revealed that reports have also emerged of another trader being assaulted under similar circumstances, raising fears of a pattern of insecurity targeting small-scale business operators in the area.
He said he visited the scene alongside families of the victims, trader representatives and officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to follow up on the case, particularly amid concerns over delays in response.
“We are committed to ensuring those responsible are brought to account. No one should lose their life or be subjected to violence while trying to earn a livelihood,” Jaguar added.
The killing has sparked anxiety among traders operating in the bustling commercial district, with many now calling for enhanced security and accountability.
Jaguar emphasized the critical role played by small-scale traders in the economy, warning that violence, impunity and abuse must not be allowed to persist.
He extended condolences to the bereaved families and assured them that efforts are ongoing to ensure justice is served and similar incidents are prevented in future.
Investigations into the killings are ongoing.
