Jubilee Party Secretary-General Jeremiah Kioni has clapped back at Moses Kuria, after President William Ruto’s senior economic advisor expressed interest in the former’s party position.
In an exclusive interview with TV47’s Abubakar Abdullahi, Kioni laughed off Kuria’s ambitions, insisting that a secretary-general position in a party is so big for someone to acquire it without working for it.
“The position of the Sec-Gen of any party is not a position available as you walk across or along the road. There is a way through which you become elected as a leader of a party. That is done through a National Delegates Council (NDC) of that particular party,” Kioni said.
Kioni was also quick to bruise Kuria’s ego, that even if he were to vie for the Jubilee Party Secretary General position, he will have to wait for until after the 2027 General Election.
“The earliest we are going to have a Jubilee Party National Delegates Conference (NDC) is 2028.”
Kioni’s rebuttal comes a day after Kuria sent cryptic social media posts, suggesting that he wants in on Jubilee Party. He first started by congratulating former President Uhuru Kenyatta, for seemingly getting back the control of the party.
The High Court delivered a key ruling regarding the Jubilee Party on Thursday last week, re-affirming Uhuru as the Jubilee Party leader, Saitoti Torome as the National Chairperson, and Kioni as the Secretary-General.
Kuria then went on to share a poster bearing his portrait and that of Uhuru, with a “for secretary general” caption.
But according to Kioni, Moses Kuria’s theatrics come at a time when many politicians have realised that Jubilee Party is still a force to reckon with in Mt Kenya politics, going on to invite him — and any other interested Kenyan — to join the party.
“I am inviting all of them, including Moses Kuria, because they have seen that a party they thought was a pale shadow of its past it is the party that will make things happen in 2027.”
And when asked if Uhuru is involved in the day to day running of the Jubilee Party, Kioni had this to say;
“Day to day running of parties is done by Secretary-Generals. The party leader(s) in the form of former President Uhuru Kenyatta will be available as and when he needs or thinks is necessary. He is not silent because there is nothing he was to say which he didn’t say. We talk when it is necessary.”
