Joho unveils roadmap to re-open Hillo gold mines in Marsabit

The Government has taken decisive steps to fast track the reopening of the Hillo Gold Mines in Marsabit County following a directive by President William Samoei Ruto.

Cabinet Secretary for Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs, Hassan Ali Joho, chaired a high level consultative meeting in Nairobi that brought together Marsabit County leadership, including Governor Mohamed Ali, Members of Parliament Prof. Guyo Waqo Jaldesa (Moyale), Dido Rasso, Wario Adhe, and Senator Mohamed Chute.

The meeting resolved to establish a multi agency team tasked with conducting a comprehensive field assessment within seven working days, effective 23 July 2026. The team will reconfirm demarcated artisanal mining areas, verify registered mining co operatives, and advise on documentation and regulatory requirements for the issuance of artisanal mining permits.

CS Joho emphasized that the reopening process must be orderly, safe, and compliant with the Mining Act, 2016.

“We are committed to ensuring that mining activities resume in a structured manner that safeguards lives, protects the environment, and promotes responsible resource development,” he said.

He further directed an intensified nationwide crackdown on illegal mining, warning that offenders would face legal consequences.

“Those found engaging in illegal mining activities or contravening the law will face appropriate legal action. Compliance is not optional it is the foundation of sustainable mining,” Joho stated.

The Cabinet Secretary also addressed the recent tragedy in Lolgorian, Narok County, where five people are feared dead following the collapse of a mining tunnel. He conveyed the Government’s condolences to the bereaved families and assured accountability.

“We will pursue all leads to ensure that individuals whose negligence or unlawful actions endangered lives are held accountable,” he remarked.

Governor Mohamed Ali welcomed the move, noting that the reopening of Hillo Gold Mines would boost local economic growth and create jobs.

“This initiative is a lifeline for our people. It will not only provide employment but also strengthen community development in Marsabit,” he said.

Senator Mohamed Chute echoed the sentiment, stressing the importance of community involvement.

“The people of Marsabit must be at the center of this process. Transparency and inclusivity will ensure that the benefits of mining reach every household,” he affirmed.

The multi agency team’s report is expected to guide the structured reopening of the mines, marking a significant step toward harnessing mineral wealth while prioritizing safety and sustainability.
