Junior Starlets face tough USA test as Amari Manning emerges as key threat

Kenya’s Junior Starlets face a challenging test against the United States today, Thursday, October 22, in their second Group E match at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco, hoping to bounce back from their opening defeat to China.

The match will be played at the Mohammed VI Football Complex, with Kenya seeking a positive result to strengthen its chances of progressing to the knockout stage.

Junior Starlets, coached by Mildred Cheche, opened their campaign with a 3-0 defeat to China on October 19. Yu Yue opened the scoring in the 12th minute before Xu Xiaotany added two goals in the second half.

Despite showing promising moments, Kenya struggled to convert its opportunities, an area that will require improvement against the Americans. The United States, meanwhile, made a remarkable start to the tournament, thrashing Samoa 17-0.

The result underlined the attacking strength of the American side and the challenge awaiting Kenya. Group E comprises the United States, Kenya, China and Samoa.

The Americans will be looking to maintain their winning momentum, while Junior Starlets must produce a stronger performance to keep their qualification hopes alive. The top two teams in each group, alongside the four best third-placed sides, will advance to the round of 16.

Amari Manning: USA’s Danger Woman. One player Kenya must watch closely is Amari Manning, a versatile forward and midfielder capable of creating scoring opportunities and finding the back of the net.

Manning has impressed with North Carolina Tar Heels, where she recorded five assists before joining the United States squad for the tournament in Morocco.

At international level, she scored from the penalty spot in a 1-1 draw against Mexico in August. She also found the net against Germany and Wales in international friendlies earlier this year.

Her ability to operate between midfield and attack makes her a potential threat to Kenya’s defensive organisation. Manning can drop into midfield, draw defenders out of position and deliver dangerous passes into the final third.

Cheche will therefore need her defenders to remain compact, close down spaces and prevent the American attacker from receiving the ball in dangerous areas.

Following the defeat to China, Cheche acknowledged that Kenya needed to improve its finishing despite showing positive signs during the match. Cheche highlighted the team’s ability to create opportunities but stressed the importance of converting them.

Her message underlines one of Kenya’s key priorities ahead of the USA encounter: turning promising attacking moves into goals.
Atieno Urges Kenyans to Keep Believing. Junior Starlets midfielder Lindey Weey Atieno also expressed confidence in the team’s ability to respond positively against the United States.

Atieno said Kenya would adopt a different approach for the match and urged supporters back home not to lose hope following the opening defeat.

She noted that the team still had two group matches to play and believed it could recover from the setback.
Her message reflects the team’s determination to remain competitive and fight for qualification despite the difficult start.

Junior Starlets will need to improve defensively, remain disciplined in midfield and take their chances in front of goal if they are to challenge the Americans.

Containing Manning and limiting the United States’ attacking options will be important, but Kenya must also ensure that its entire defensive unit works together to prevent the opposition from exploiting gaps.

The match offers Cheche’s side an opportunity to respond to the opening defeat and demonstrate its ability to compete on the global stage.

For Kenya, the mission is clear: improve the finishing, maintain defensive discipline and fight for a result that keeps its World Cup campaign alive.
