Former Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi has been reinstated as the Democratic Party leader.
Muturi was picked as the party’s supremo in a unanimous decision made by members of the National Executive Committee.
“A new chapter begins for the Democratic Party. I sincerely thank the members of the National Executive Committee (NEC) for their confidence in me and their unanimous resolution to reinstate me as the Party Leader with immediate effect,” Muturi said on X on Tuesday, June 10.
The decision by the Democratic Party’s NEC is now subject to ratification by the National Delegates Convention (NDC) later this year.
“This decision is not just a personal honour, it is a call to action as we work together to rebuild, re-energize, and reposition our party for the future,” Muturi added.
In the run-up to the 2022 General Election, Muturi led the Democratic Party, founded by the late Mwai Kibaki in 1991, and joined then-Deputy President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza Alliance.
Muturi would later resign as the party leader in October 2022, after President Ruto appointed him as Kenya’s Attorney General.
However, his relationship with President Ruto strained. In early 2025, Muturi would embark on a sustained criticism of the government he was a part of, condemning abductions, including that of his son, allegedly carried out by State agents.
In a mini-reshuffle in his Cabinet in March 2025, President Ruto sacked Muturi from his Cabinet, replacing him with Mbeere North MP Geoffrey Ruku.
The Democratic Party has since moved to sever ties with President Ruto-led Kenya Kwanza Alliance.
In March 2025, the party, in writing and in keeping with the terms of the coalition agreement, gave a 30 days’ notice of its exit.
The Registrar of Political Parties confirmed receipt of the copy of the notification, which would make DP the first party to exit the coalition since its inception in 2022.
Muturi has since closed ranks and joined other opposition leaders including but not limited to; Rigathi Gachagua, Kalonzo Musyoka, Eugene Wamalwa, and Fred Matiang’i.
