The Kenya Community Support Centre Organisation (KECOSCE) held a learning meeting in Malindi with, state actors, religious leaders, CSOs,Youth, women and community members from Kilifi County, Malindi and Magarini subcounties to reflect on the ptlroject initiatives on ways to prevent and counter violence extremism conflicts and promote peace.

The organisation, which runs an Early Warning and Immediate Response programme, catalyses communities identify and report early signs of local conflicts and violence extremism breeding grounds. Through cooperation with security officers and local leaders, KECOSCE has received over 40 security alerts that could have escalated into conflict.

Speaking to the media, Early Response Coordinator Kevin Baraza said there are several indicators that point to potential conflict in Kilifi. However, he noted that the organisation is working closely with security agencies to help identify and address such cases early.

“Our community is at risk of threats such as terrorism, especially in Kilifi County, including attacks on churches and other misconducts. This programme has helped us greatly in creating awareness about these dangers,” said Baraza.

The organisation also identified factors that can cause hatred among communities. Baraza noted that some individuals are using digital platforms to radicalise youths, with some being taken to Somalia.
KECOSCE also presented data that can be used by security agencies to identify factors influencing conflict, with the aim of protecting young people from radicalisation.

Baraza added that the government has introduced the NYOTA programme, which supports youths by keeping them engaged in productive activities and away from extremist groups.

According to Baraza, the organisation has already identified over 300 hotspot areas across Kilifi County and other parts of the Coast region, including Mombasa and Tana River counties, where police officers have been deployed to enhance security.

Malindi Security and Peace Instructors Chairman Francis Katana praised KECOSCE for its contribution to peace-building in the community.

“Some youths have changed completely because of these programmes, and we thank KECOSCE for their efforts,” said Katana.
