Kenya Met warns of heavy rains, thunderstorms and freezing night this weekend

The Kenya Meteorological Department has advised residents across several parts of the country to prepare for moderate to heavy rainfall over the next five days, following its weekend weather advisory released on Friday, March 13, 2026.

According to Kenya Met, the rains are expected to affect five broad regions; Western Kenya, the Central Highlands, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, and the South-eastern lowlands.

Counties in Western Kenya, the Rift Valley, and the Lake Victoria Basin falling under the forecast include Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot.

These areas are expected to receive heavy afternoon downpours accompanied by thunderstorms, preceded by light morning showers and sunny mid-morning intervals.

Night rains are also anticipated in some of these counties.

A similar weather pattern is forecast for the Central Highland counties of Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, and Nairobi.

Residents in these areas should expect heavy rains from Friday through Saturday, after which rainfall is projected to ease for the remainder of the forecast period.

Lighter rains are expected in the South-eastern Lowlands, covering Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, Taita Taveta, and inland parts of Tana River County.

Beyond rainfall, Kenya Met has flagged temperature extremes at both ends of the spectrum.

Residents of Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, and Nairobi should brace for very cold nights, with temperatures expected to drop as low as 9°C, rising slightly to around 11°C towards the end of the forecast period.

Meanwhile, North Eastern counties; including Wajir, Mandera, Garissa, Marsabit, and Isiolo, are set for scorching daytime highs of up to 38°C, over the same period.
