Samuel Wanyonyi Wangila, a dedicated aqua rescue with the Kenya Red Cross Society who died from electrocution while helping search for the body of a missing boy around Nyayo Highrise, Kibera, Nairobi, will be buried on Saturday, March 14, 2026.
Wangila, who was also a lifeguard at Wadi Degla Club, will be laid to rest at his family’s rural home in Sirakaru Village, Naitiri, Bungoma County.
Today (Thursday, March 12), a memorial service will be held at All Saints Cathedral Church from 11.30AM.
On the fateful day (March 3, 2026), Wangila was part of an emergency rescue effort to assist a young boy who had reportedly drowned. Tragically, he lost his life while attempting to save others.
Before meeting his death, Wangila had served as a volunteer with the Kenya Red Cross Society for more than 15 years, dedicating his time and skills to protecting at-risk communities.
Known for his professionalism, courage and commitment, he was among the most experienced members of the National Society’s aqua rescue teams and had trained and mentored many volunteers across the country.
In 2025, he received the Special Recognition Award at the Kenya Red Cross Volunteer Awards in acknowledgement of his outstanding service in water rescue operations nationwide.
He was a loving husband of Joan Wanjiku and adoring father of young Elan Wangila and Klarissa Wangila.
