Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has initiated a call for investigations into the Kenya Rugby Union (KRU), focusing on its operations, financial management, and governance.
During a Senate sitting on Wednesday, Sifuna invoked Standing Order 53(1) to request a detailed statement from the Senate Committee on Labour and Social Welfare.
Senator Sifuna asked the committee to provide a comprehensive account of KRU’s operations and financial status.
This request included a breakdown of all sponsorship funds received from corporate entities between 2022 and 2025, along with detailed expenditures during that period. He further sought clarity on the current status of a report filed by KRU Chairman Sasha Mutai to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), which alleged criminal and fraudulent activities within the Union.
Additionally, Sifuna urged the committee to verify whether all serving directors at KRU possess the necessary qualifications for their roles. He stated the need for transparency and asked the committee to establish whether governance structures at KRU meet the required standards.
Sifuna also inquired about measures being taken to resolve internal challenges within the Union, citing concerns about potential sanctions from World Rugby.
Meawhile the Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot supported Sifuna’s call for transparency, encouraging KRU to open its books for scrutiny.
Cheruiyot expressed hope that KRU would be open to this kind of scrutiny and indicated the House’s willingness to assist them in achieving their objectives.
This action sets the stage for a potentially pivotal moment for Kenyan rugby, as KRU is currently facing pressure due to internal disputes and questions regarding financial management.
The Senate Committee on Labour and Social Welfare is expected to respond with a comprehensive report in the coming weeks, a process that could lead to significant reforms and increased accountability within KRU and potentially other sports federations in Kenya.
