A group of more than 5,000 football enthusiast have signed a petition urging President William Ruto to award former Harambee Stars captain Musa Otieno the Head of State Commendation (HSC) medal, in recognition of his outstanding service to football and the community.
The petition drive, spearheaded by football enthusiasts, former players, and sports stakeholders, culminated in a sports day event in Jericho, Nairobi, where Otieno led a team of ex-internationals in a friendly match as supporters appended their signatures.
Musa Otieno, affectionately known as “Otero,” is widely regarded as one of Kenya’s most accomplished footballers. He holds a national record of 105 appearances for the Harambee Stars over a 15-year career, serving as a dependable captain and mentor to younger players.
Beyond his playing days, Otieno has contributed as a coach for both the national men’s and women’s teams and currently runs the Kick off to Hope football academy in Makadara, which nurtures young talent, many of whom have gone on to play professionally abroad.
The petition, led by Martin Kang’ara and supported by figures such as former Football Kenya Federation Head of Communication Kenn Okaka, seeks to formally request the President to bestow the HSC medal on Otieno.
The Head of State Commendation, awarded on the advice of the National Honours and Awards Committee, recognizes individuals who have made exemplary contributions to the nation in fields such as sports, public service, and community development.
Supporters argue that Otieno’s leadership, discipline, and commitment both on and off the pitch make him a worthy candidate for the honor.
They hope that recognizing Otieno will set a precedent for honoring other sports legends who have positively impacted society.
The formal process involves submitting a detailed nomination, including testimonials and records of achievement, to the Office of the President or relevant authorities for consideration.
As the petition gathers momentum, the sports community and Eastlands residents continue to rally support, viewing the initiative as an important step toward celebrating Kenya’s sporting heroes and inspiring future generations.
