Kenyan Relay teams to Train in Miramas, France ahead of 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo

Athletics Kenya Senior Vice President Paul Mutwii, who led the delegation at the recent World Athletics Relays in Guangzhou, China, has revealed plans to send the relay teams for a residential training camp in Miramas, France, ahead of the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo this September.

This move aims to leverage the state-of-the-art facilities in Miramas to enhance the athletes’ preparations and boost their performance on the global stage.

Mutwii praised the team’s performance in China, where three out of four relay squads set national records and secured qualification for the Tokyo World Championships. “We did well in China; three out of four teams set national records and qualified for World Championships in Tokyo.

As a director of competition, we will recommend that the team train out of the country in preparation for the World Championships,” he said.

Echoing Mutwii’s sentiments, team manager Kennedy Tanui called on the Kenyan government to provide full support for the team’s preparations.

He emphasized the importance of the Miramas camp, noting that the facilities available there surpass those in Kenya. “We hope the government will help the team get special training in Miramas, France, before the World Championships since it has the state-of-the-art facilities, unlike here in Kenya,” Tanui stated.

Kenya secured three relay qualifications at the World Relays: the men’s 4x400m, mixed 4x400m, and men’s 4x100m relays.

The mixed 4x400m team-comprising David Sanayek, Mercy Chebet, Brian Tinega, and Mercy Aoko-clinched a bronze medal with a season-best time of 3:13.10, marking Kenya’s only podium finish at the championships.

The partnership between Kenya and Miramas is part of a broader strategy to provide Kenyan athletes with world-class training environments ahead of major competitions. Miramas has previously hosted Kenyan teams preparing for the Olympics and other global events, offering cutting-edge sports science and training infrastructure.

With the residential camp scheduled ahead of the Tokyo World Championships, Kenyan relay teams aim to build on their recent successes and contend strongly on the world stage this September.
