KSh1.9B Dho Goye Bridge linking Siaya and Busia counties to open early 2027

Construction of the KSh1.9 billion Dho Goye Bridge, which links Siaya and Busia counties, is expected to be completed early next year, with works currently at 75 per cent completion.

Francis Okoth, representative of the resident engineer, said the 200-metre bridge across River Yala is on track for final setting next month, after which contractors will focus on completing the 2.5km approach roads on both sides.

“The contractor is not owed any arrears by the government and we will finish the bridge, ready for commissioning early next year,” Okoth told the Siaya National Government Development Implementation Coordination Committee during a site visit.

The committee was led by Siaya County Commissioner Norbert Jara Komora and Government Delivery Unit (GDU) Regional Director Allan Luvungu.

While commending progress on the bridge and affordable housing units in Siaya town, Luvungu expressed concern over stalled projects, including the Siaya town modern market and a tuition block and hostels at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST) in Bondo.

“We have noted that some contractors are not on site and we will escalate this to the highest office to unlock them,” Luvungu said, adding that most delays were due to contractors’ limited capacity to deliver.

Komora said the national government has invested billions of shillings in development projects across all constituencies in Siaya County, including affordable housing units in Alego/Usonga, Gem, Ugenya and Bondo, student hostels in Rarieda, and various road projects.

On rural electrification, he said more than 8,000 households have been connected to the national grid, with additional connections expected before the end of the year.

“The projects have helped create employment and improve the local economy, hence the need for the public to reciprocate by supporting the government,” Komora said.

Construction of the Dho Goye Bridge began in 2021 but stalled a year later due to financial challenges.

Work resumed in 2025 after the government released funds for its completion.
