Machakos MPs earn public approval as grassroots development shapes local priorities – Survey

Members of Parliament (MPs) from Machakos County have received favourable public ratings following a constituency performance survey that points to steady progress in education, water access, youth empowerment, and social welfare initiatives across the region.

The survey, released on January 27, 2026 by Kenya Track Survey, indicates that residents largely assess their MPs based on tangible constituency-level outcomes rather than national political rhetoric. Education infrastructure, bursary support, water projects, and NG-CDF utilisation emerged as the most visible measures of leadership performance.

Conducted between January 2 and January 23, 2026, the study sampled 4,879 respondents from both rural and urban settings across all eight constituencies in Machakos County. Data was collected through randomised telephonic interviews among adults aged 18 and above.

Yatta MP Robert Ngui Basil recorded the highest approval rating at 72 percent, with respondents attributing his score to sustained investments in water and drought mitigation.

Residents pointed to the construction of earth dams in several wards and continued advocacy for the Yatta Mega Dam as key interventions aimed at improving irrigation and food security.

His constituency also registered strong approval for education support, including classroom construction, bursary allocation, school feeding programmes, and the establishment of KMTC Matuu Campus.

Kathiani MP Robert Mbui followed closely with a 70 percent rating.

Respondents noted his emphasis on education infrastructure, skills development, and community engagement on health and social welfare matters, even as some residents expressed expectations for more visible large-scale projects.

In Mwala, Vincent Musyoka Musau scored 68 percent, with locals citing solar-powered high-mast street lighting as a major boost to security and night-time economic activity.

His advocacy for improved road connectivity and rural electrification was also mentioned.

Machakos Town MP Caleb Mutiso Mule posted a 67 percent approval score, with residents highlighting improved constituency responsiveness, education support initiatives, and involvement in discussions around affordable housing and urban development.

Matungulu MP Stephen Mutinda Mule attained a 65 percent rating, largely linked to consistent bursary disbursement, investment in education infrastructure, and continuity in constituency leadership.

Kangundo MP Fabian Kyule Muli was rated at 64 percent, with respondents acknowledging efforts to revive stalled NG-CDF projects, expand bursary access, and advocate for water solutions in drought-affected areas.

Masinga MP Joshua Mbithi Mutua scored 62 percent, with community members pointing to classroom construction, sanitation improvements, and water access initiatives as notable achievements.

Mavoko MP Patrick Makau King’ola recorded a 60 percent rating, with his work mainly associated with industrial advocacy, transport infrastructure, urban services, and labour welfare within the county’s key industrial zone.

Overall, the survey found that Machakos County MPs have largely prioritised constituency-driven development, with education and basic infrastructure forming the backbone of public approval.

Respondents, however, underscored the need for stronger project visibility, equitable distribution of resources, and sustained accountability to maintain public trust moving forward.
