Man arrested in Bomet after allegedly strangling girlfriend after break‑up

Police officers in Bomet County have arrested a 29‑year‑old man accused of strangling his 25‑year‑old girlfriend to death after she told him she wanted to end their relationship.

The suspected killing occurred on Sunday evening in Chepkitach village, located in Konoin Sub‑County, leaving the local community in shock and mourning.

According to preliminary reports, the victim and the suspect had been in a relationship for an extended period.

Neighbours told investigators that tensions had risen in the days leading up to the incident when the woman expressed her desire to separate from the man.

Shortly after the discussion, an argument reportedly broke out at the home where the couple had been living.

Alleged murder and arrest

Relatives and neighbours later heard loud noises and cries for help, prompting them to rush to the scene.

They found the young woman unconscious and suspected she had been strangled. Attempts to revive her were unsuccessful, and she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Villagers then apprehended the suspect as he tried to flee and handed him over to responding police officers.

The suspect was taken into custody at a local police station in Bomet, where he is being questioned. Authorities have launched a full investigation into the killing, including interviews with neighbours and friends, and will conduct a post‑mortem examination to establish the exact cause of death

Residents in Chepkitach village described the incident as heartbreaking, saying it has created a sombre mood in the area.

Community leaders have called for justice for the victim and urged authorities to ensure a thorough legal process.

The suspected killing underscores ongoing concerns about gender‑based violence in Kenya, where authorities continue to call for peaceful ways to resolve disputes and stronger interventions to protect vulnerable individuals.
