Man who killed python after dog attack in Ugunja to be compensated

A man who killed a python after it attacked and killed his dog at Luoka Village in Madungu Sub-Location, Ugunja, Siaya County, is set to receive government compensation.

52-year-old Charles Osore is said to have intervened when the giant snake attacked his beloved dog. Unfortunately, the help came too late as the canine died.

The incident, which drew national attention, prompted a visit by a team from the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) led by Grace Kariuki, Senior Warden for Kisumu and Siaya counties.

Speaking at the home of Mr. Osore, Kariuki thanked him for cooperating with authorities despite the loss of his dog, saying that they visited to support him and to begin the compensation process.

“We want to thank him for bringing the dead python (trophy) to the government. We want to tell Mr Osore that the government will stand with you,” Kariuki said. “We have come with the relevant compensation forms, and when the time comes, he will be compensated.”

The KWS officials assured residents that the government will handle the matter and emphasized the importance of reporting wildlife incidents promptly. The team also pledged to conduct awareness sessions in the area to educate communities on how to respond to wildlife encounters.

Osore lauded the government for heeding the community’s concerns, while urging KWS officials to act with speed and efficiency whenever reports of human–wildlife conflicts are raised.

“Sina shida na serikali, vile wamekuja ivi waangalie vile watanisaidia. Ni vizuri wamekuja kututembelea kwa sababu awali hatukuwa tunajua pahali pa kuripoti visa kama hivi. Kuanzia sahi, hata wananchi wenyewe wanajua jinsi ya kuangazia masuala ya kukabiliana na nyoka au kima,” Osore said.

The area residents expressed gratitude for the visit, noting that the incident had helped them learn more about wildlife conservation and the proper channels for reporting conflicts with animals such as monkeys and snakes.
