Manchester United fan’s 500-day haircut challenge nears end

A Manchester United supporter living in Spain could finally end a nearly 500-day personal challenge if the club secures another Premier League victory.

Frank Ilett, 29, vowed in October 2024 that he would not cut his hair until Manchester United won five consecutive matches, a promise he made during a difficult period for the club.

Since then, his growing hair and dedication to the challenge have attracted massive attention online, earning him over one million social media followers under the handle @theunitedstrand.

“I can say I’m aware of it, yeah. My kids have made me aware of it, if anything,” said interim Manchester United manager Michael Carrick, reacting to the viral challenge. “It does make me smile but it won’t have an impact ultimately in the end.”

Under Carrick’s interim leadership, United have revived their form, winning four straight league matches against Manchester City, Arsenal, Fulham, and Tottenham Hotspur, the club’s longest winning run since Ilett began the challenge.

Previously, the team never managed more than three consecutive wins under former manager Ruben Amorim.

With only one match remaining to complete the five-game streak, anticipation is building ahead of United’s clash with West Ham scheduled for Tuesday night at 11 p.m. EAT.

“This hair is going soon. Four out of five done. This is the first time it’s been four in a row since I started the challenge. This time, it is happening,” Frank said. “There will be a watchalong for the fifth game against West Ham.”

TNT Sports shared a post on X, teasing Frank about his potential barbers’ appointment on Wednesday, saying: ‘Man United have won four Premier League matches in a row… Will Frank finally get his trim?’

The broadcaster also posted an AI image of manager Michael Carrick giving the 29-year-old a trim while sitting in a barber’s chair.

If Manchester United wins, Frank has pledged to donate his hair to the Little Princess Trust, a UK charity that provides wigs to children who have lost their hair due to illness.
