Controversial televangelist Bishop Gilbert Deya died on Tuesday evening, June 17, after being involved in a tragic road accident at Namba Kapiyo along the Kisumu–Bondo highway.
Preliminary investigations indicate that Bishop Deya’s Toyota Noah vehicle lost control, veering into the path of a bus belonging to Moi University.
Witnesses suggest Deya was attempting to avoid a head-on collision with a Siaya County government vehicle when the accident occurred.
Bishop Deya was pronounced dead at the scene. Two passengers in his vehicle, identified as his wife and another woman, sustained minor injuries.
The Moi University bus was transporting students, 15 of whom sustained injuries. Three seriously injured students have been transferred to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital in Kisumu for specialized treatment.
The remaining 12 students received treatment for minor injuries at Kombewa Sub-County Hospital.
Bishop Gilbert Deya gained national and international notoriety in the early 2000s due to the controversial “miracle babies” saga.
This controversy led to his arrest and subsequent extradition from the United Kingdom to Kenya to face charges related to child trafficking.
Despite significant legal battles and intense public scrutiny surrounding the scandal, Deya continued his televangelism and religious outreach activities until his death.
