Mlango Kubwa residents left in the dark for over a month

Residents of Mlango Kubwa area in Mathare North, Nairobi, have been living without electricity for more than a month, a situation that has disrupted livelihoods, increased insecurity, and strained access to essential services.

The prolonged blackout is reportedly linked to illegal electricity connections by some residents, which has led to intervention and disconnection by Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC). As a result, the entire neighborhood has been left without a reliable power supply.

The impact on local businesses has been severe. Mlango Kubwa is home to many small-scale entrepreneurs who depend on electricity to operate. Hair salons, barbershops, and tailoring businesses that rely on electric sewing machines have either shut down or are operating at minimal capacity. Business owners report significant financial losses, with many struggling to sustain their daily operations.

In addition to economic hardship, the lack of electricity has disrupted access to clean water. Many households rely on electrically powered pumps, and without power, water scarcity has become a pressing issue for residents.

Security concerns are also mounting. Residents fear that the prolonged darkness could lead to an increase in crime, particularly in a densely populated area like Mathare. Poor lighting has already made the neighborhood more vulnerable, with locals expressing growing anxiety over their safety.

To cope with the blackout, some residents have resorted to using rechargeable lamps. However, the cost of purchasing and maintaining these alternatives is proving to be a financial burden for many households.

Residents are now calling on the Nairobi County government and relevant authorities to urgently intervene and restore electricity in the area. They emphasize the need for a lasting solution that addresses both illegal connections and the broader power supply challenges affecting the community.

As of the time of publication, Mlango Kubwa remains in darkness, with residents continuing to bear the economic and social consequences of the prolonged power outage.
