Mombasa MP threatens to quit ODM if she is denied party ticket in 2027

Wrangles have emerged within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) in Mombasa after Woman Representative Zamzam Mohamed alleged that some party members are plotting to deny her the party ticket ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Speaking during the International Widows’ Day commemorations in Mombasa, Zamzam declared that she is prepared to defend her seat in next year’s polls on any available party ticket if she is aggrieved in ODM Party nominations.

The lawmaker is banking on her track record and commitment to serve the people of Mombasa as the reason why she will be re-elected, as opposed to being the flagbearer of a particular party.

The first-term MP cannot fathom why some individuals within ODM are out to frustrate her re-election bid despite her loyalty to the party.

She further linked her current political woes to her public endorsement of Mombasa County Assembly Speaker Aharub Khatri’s reported gubernatorial ambitions, insisting that leaders should be free to express their political views without intimidation or victimisation.

At the same event, Speaker Khatri urged residents to elect leaders based on their track record, integrity and development agenda rather than political affiliations or propaganda. While declining to formally declare his bid for the county’s top seat, Khatri said he will announce his 2027 political plans at the appropriate time, adding that his current focus remains on serving the people through his responsibilities as Speaker.

The remarks come amid growing political realignments and heightened succession politics in Mombasa as leaders begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election, with competition for ODM Party nominations expected to intensify in the coming months.
