Questions raised as billionaire Jaswant Singh Rai is released by abductors

Billionaire sugar investor Jaswant Singh Rai was on Sunday, August 27 evening released by his ‘kidnappers’, two days after he was allegedly abducted.

The West Kenya Sugar Company chairman is now safe after being re-united by his family, his lawyer Kioko Kilukumi said.

However, the whereabouts as well as the identities of his kidnappers remain unknown.

In a dramatic daylight kidnapping, Jaswant was driving his Toyota LC200 on Friday, August 25 when persons driving a double cab pick-up truck ambushed him at the junction of Wood Avenue in Kilimani, Nairobi County.

CCTV footage doing rounds on social media shows the four men forcibly dragging out the occupant of Jaswant’s car, bundling him into their car before speeding off.

All these happened at around 4 p.m.

The latest development has, however, left more questions than answers.

Initially, Jaswant’s family had accused the police of kidnapping their patriarch, but the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) boss Mohamed Amin has strongly denied the claims.
