Moses Kuria urges IEBC to act on violence during campaigns for upcoming by-elections

Former Public Service Cabinet Secretary and Chama Cha Kazi party leader, Moses Kuria, has sounded an urgent warning regarding the escalating insecurity and rising political tensions ahead of several by-elections in the country.

Speaking during a press briefing on Saturday, November 22, 2025, Kuria called on the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) and President William Ruto to reinforce security and prevent chaos that he warned could damage Kenya’s international standing.

Kuria specifically highlighted the need for security in areas like Narok and Mbeere North, noting that he had already engaged senior election officials on the matter.

“Just the other day, someone said that Gachagua should not come here… if Gachagua is touched, I’m also touched because there can be no integrity in the election if one person is the one to decide,” Kuria said.

The Mbeere North Parliamentary by-election, scheduled for November 27, has become a high-stakes proxy battle, attracting top political figures.

Moses Kuria is campaigning for Ireri Mbui (Chama Cha Kazi candidate), Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is backing Newton Karish (United Opposition candidate), and Deputy President Kithure Kindiki is drumming up support for Leonard Muthende (UDA).

Kuria’s warning was underscored by a violent incident that occurred just a day earlier. Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya narrowly escaped an attack while campaigning for an independent MCA candidate, Erick Wekesa, in Chwele Kabuchai Ward.

Natembeya’s party, the Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K), confirmed the attack and immediately issued a statement on X:

DAP-K directly blamed the confrontation on “goons allegedly linked to Speaker Moses Wetang’ula,” whose Ford Kenya party supports a rival candidate. The party urged the IEBC and the National Police Service (NPS) to take immediate action, warning that continued silence would lead to political unrest.

He issued a stern warning against any leader considering rigging the vote, suggesting that such actions would have severe consequences, contrasting Kenya’s situation with that of its neighbour.

“I know most of the people think that we can go the Tanzanian way, but Kenyans are not Tanzanians; it will not be business as usual. Let no leader think of stealing the votes.”

Kuria concluded by making a direct plea to the Head of State, emphasising that the international community is closely observing how Kenya manages these crucial by-elections.
