The Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) has announced the appointment of Vice Chairman Moses Ndale as the Acting Chairman of the Union, following the sudden resignation of Alexander “Sasha” Mutai.

The decision was communicated today by the Union, confirming that Ndale will serve in an interim capacity for 14 days.

During this two-week period, the KRU Board is expected to convene and elect a new Chairman from among its current members, in accordance with the Union’s governance constitution.

Ndale has served as Vice Chairman since his election in September 2022 and now steps into the Union’s top leadership role during a period of transition.

In a statement issued by the Union, KRU noted: “Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) wishes to announce the resignation of Mr. Alexander Mutai – Sasha, from his position as Chairman of the Union, effective immediately. Alexander tendered his resignation in a Special General Meeting that was held at the RFUEA Grounds on Friday 30th May 2025.”

The statement added: “Following this development, the KRU Board has appointed Mr. Moses Ndale as the Acting Chairman of the Union for 14 days, during which the Board will convene and elect a new Chairman from among its current members, as per the Union’s governance constitution.”

Sasha Mutai officially stepped down from the chairmanship on Friday, May 30, during a tense Special General Meeting (SGM) held at the RFUEA Grounds in Nairobi. His resignation came moments before a no-confidence motion, sponsored by KRU Secretary General Ray Olendo, was scheduled to be tabled.

Mutai, who took office unopposed in March 2023, cited internal wrangles within the board, political pressure, and a desire to preserve his integrity as the reasons for his resignation.

“As you said you own the players and reading the room, the mood, I will follow the person I look up to, Mwangi Muthee. I hereby tender my resignation as chairman of KRU,” Mutai stated during the meeting.
