Mount Kenya University shines at 97th Kenya National Music Festivals

Mount Kenya University (MKU)has once again proven its artistic excellence at the 97th Kenya National Music Festivals, delivering a powerful performance across multiple categories and solidifying its place among the top creative institutions in the country.

In the verse category, MKU’s verse group emerged as a powerhouse, securing 8 wins and over 10 podium finishes, showcasing their lyrical mastery and performance depth.

 Choir and Sponsored Song Success

The university choir added to the accolades by winning the boys’ arrangement category and a sponsored song by the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner (ODPC) promoting safe data use on online platforms

 Cultural Dance Excellence

MKU also impressed in traditional arts, winning in Meru folk song and Meru cultural dance.

These wins highlighted the university’s commitment to preserving and celebrating Kenya’s rich cultural heritage.

In overall MKU had 17 first-place finishes, 10 second-place finishes and 8 third-place finishes.

While the overall win went to Kenyatta University, MKU’s performance was a close second and a source of immense pride.

“I am proud of these young souls. What makes me happier is that as a university, we maximize and limit our performance only to current and active students. We train and groom them, and seeing them perform this well is truly fulfilling,” said Mr. William Luta, Head of Sports, Film, and Creative Arts.

Mr. Peter Waweru, Student Welfare Principal, praised the university’s support system.

“All this is through the support the university gives the students. This support can only be improved  to ensure the teams are comfortable and have necessary instruments  at their disposal.”

Looking Ahead to 2026

With the 98th edition of the Kenya National Music Festivals set for 2026, MKU is already strategizing for even greater success, building on this year’s momentum and refining areas of improvement.

Winners including Mount Kenya University, entertained the president at State House on Saturday August 16, 2025.
