Sakaja hails landmark Nairobi Arena deal signed at State House, set to drive city’s entertainment transformation

Nairobi is set for a major transformation following the signing of an agreement to establish a modern arena and entertainment district in the Railway area. The project is expected to be completed in less than 12 months.

The multi-million initiative is poised to redefine the city’s cultural, sporting, and economic landscape, positioning Kenya’s capital as a premier destination for global events, sports, and entertainment.

Speaking during the signing, Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja hailed the project as a long-awaited breakthrough, noting that previous administrations had discussed the idea without success.

“This is a dream come true. The discussions have been ongoing for years, across two administrations, but it has never been done. Now it is finally happening,” said Sakaja.

The governor described the arena as a reflection of Nairobi’s unique identity, saying the city’s “vibe, sound and spirit” would now find a world-class home. He added that the facility will host a wide range of activities, including concerts, conferences, and basketball games, turning sports and entertainment into a key economic driver.

“This arena will bring in events and opportunities. It is not just about entertainment; it is business. It will create jobs, grow our economy, and open doors for our youth to express themselves and earn a living,” he said.

Sakaja emphasized Nairobi’s strategic global position, noting its accessibility from major cities such as London and Amsterdam, making it an ideal hub for international events.

He also expressed confidence that the arena will elevate Nairobi into Africa’s basketball capital, attracting talent and fans from across the region.

“This will change Nairobi into the heart of basketball in Africa. Young people from across the region will look to Nairobi as the centre of opportunity,” he added.

The governor credited President William Ruto for fast-tracking the project, praising his focus on action and delivery.

“Mr President, you have made it happen. Others began the conversation, but you have delivered. This is about less talk and more action. On behalf of Nairobi, we are proud and grateful. This project will change our city,” Sakaja said.

Once complete, the arena is expected to anchor a vibrant entertainment district, unlocking new investments and cementing Nairobi’s status as a leading urban hub in Africa.
