Philip Aroko, one of the suspects in the murder of Kasipul MP Charles Were, was on Friday, May 16 released on a cash bail of KSh300,000.
While releasing Aroko on cash bail, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) Law Courts Principal Magistrate Irene Gichobi set several conditions the suspect must meet.
Gichobi ordered the businessman surrender his passport to the court. Aroko was also ordered not to travel to Homa Bay County. He was also barred from contracting family members, other suspects or individuals associated with the case.
Additionally, the court directed Aroko to refrain from interfering with evidence critical to the murder investigation.
Aroko will be required to regularly report regularly to investigating officers and to provide any evidence needed in connection with the case.
Initially, prosecution was opposed to Aroko being released from custody.
“We’ve heard the respondent… he has been cooperating, but we’re investigating the death of a deceased, and this case is of public interest. It is essential that he is detained for seven days to help us determine his level of involvement. We will either bring charges or request his release after this period,” the prosecution had argued.
Aroko is among 11 suspects under investigation for the murder of the MP.
The case will be mentioned on June 3, 2025.
