Kenya’s Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has fired back at United States Senator Jim Risch following his strong criticism of President William Ruto’s recent remarks in China, asserting Kenya’s sovereign right to choose its international partners without foreign interference.
The diplomatic tension unfolded after Senator Risch questioned Kenya’s loyalty to the United States, citing Ruto’s declaration in Beijing that Kenya and China were “co-architects of a new world order.” The Idaho senator, known for his hawkish stance on U.S.-China relations, warned that Kenya’s deepening ties with Beijing could strain its long-standing relationship with Washington—especially under a potential second Trump administration.
In a bold move to clarify Kenya’s stance, Mudavadi confirmed on Tuesday that he had officially written to Senator Risch to provide context and affirm Kenya’s position.
“No matter our size or state of nation, there is one thing we must always safeguard—the sovereignty of our nation, the right to choose our friends and how to work with them. That is a principle we must always uphold,” Mudavadi stated during an interview.
The CS emphasized that President Ruto’s remarks had been taken out of context and Kenya’s foreign policy remains anchored in mutual respect and balance.
“I have written a formal letter to the Senator explaining Kenya’s position and getting him to appreciate the context in which the statement he is alluding to was made,” Mudavadi said.
Senator Risch, speaking on May 15, did not mince words in his criticism. “Relying on leaders who embrace Beijing so openly is an error. It’s time to reassess our relationship with Kenya and others who forge tight bonds with China,” he warned.
However, Mudavadi maintained that Kenya will continue to nurture constructive partnerships with both the East and the West.
“Global politics is dynamic and decisions are made for certain reasons at certain times. But as far as Kenya is concerned, we look at our national interest and work to sustain mutually beneficial partnerships with all countries,” the CS asserted.
The exchange underscores the growing geopolitical tension between China and the U.S., with African nations like Kenya navigating the delicate balance of diplomacy amid shifting global power dynamics.
As the debate unfolds, Kenya’s position remains firm: sovereignty is non-negotiable.
