Mwingi leaders tell off area MP for urging NGO to stop drilling boreholes

Leaders in Mwingi Central, Kitui County have condemned remarks by the area MP Gideon Mutemi Mulyungi over a local non-governmental organization (NGO) drilling boreholes in the constituency.

Speaking on August 27, 2026, the leaders termed the utterances reckless and unwarranted.

This was after the MP had asked the NGO to vacate the area if it continued drilling boreholes without involving his office.

Led by former Mwingi Central MP Joe Mutambu and Kitui County Finance Chief Officer John Makau, the leaders have urged the NGO to ignore the remarks and continue supporting residents, noting that Mwingi is an arid area facing acute water shortages.

The leaders further argued that water is a devolved function and called on the MP to avoid interfering with county government functions.
