Nairobi County urges residents to vacate riparian zones as search ends at Shauri Moyo collapsed building site

Four people died and four others were rescued after a building collapsed at Blue Estate in Shauri Moyo, Kamukunji Sub-County, on Monday.

Nairobi City County confirmed that search and rescue operations at the site have now been concluded, with emergency teams successfully retrieving survivors and victims from the rubble.

According to a statement to the media, four male victims were rescued from the debris. Two of them were rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital for further treatment, while two others received first aid at the scene.

Tragically, four unidentified male bodies were also recovered from the collapsed structure and handed over to police officers.

The building was among structures located along the Nairobi River riparian corridor that had been earmarked for demolition under the ongoing Nairobi River Regeneration Programme.

The rescue operation brought together several agencies, including the Nairobi City County Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) team, county firefighters, the National Disaster Management Unit, the Kenya Defence Forces Disaster Response Battalion, and the Kenya Red Cross.

Authorities have since handed over the scene to the Kamukunji Assistant County Commissioner, and the area has been cordoned off due to safety concerns after an adjacent building showed signs of possible structural failure.

Preliminary reports indicate that the victims were salvaging steel bars and other construction materials from the abandoned building when the structure suddenly collapsed.

Meanwhile, Nairobi City County has urged residents living along riparian corridors and riverbanks to relocate from high-risk areas, warning that recent heavy rains have significantly raised water levels in several rivers across the city, increasing the risk of flooding.
