Nairobi family in fear as son named after President William Ruto is taunted in school

A family in Nairobi’s Eastlands is in distress as their child is facing constant harassment from his schoolmates, by virute of sharing a name with President William Ruto.

According to the boy’s mother, Diana Naomi, her child has been on the receiving end of constant harassment from his peers, his only mistake is to share a name with the Head of State.

“Kutoka 2022 mwezi wa tisa, wakati Ruto alichukua uongozi, kwa sababu nilikuwa nampenda sana niliita mtoto wangu William Ruto. Mtoto ako PP2, lakini shida ni mtoto akiwa shuleni kila siku akija ananiambia ‘Mum mimi sitarudi hiyo shule tena’. Nikamwuliza kwa nini, akaniambia, ‘tukienda break ama tukitoka parade, watoto wananiita Ruto Must Go, ama Wantam…Alafu wanakuja wengi wananiimbia Ruto must go, Ruto must go’,” the mother narrates.

She says that the son has implored her to change his name to avert this treatment, or change schools.

“Nikamwambia siwezi change jina yake because I love Ruto, na jina haiwezi fanya usisome,” she told journalists.

But Diana has become more worried because of recent developments in the country, questioning whether her son — or herself — is safe anymore. “Sasa uoga wangu ni tangu nione yule mama alichomwa, na yule mwingine alichomwa Kibra, niko na uoga.”

The family is calling for immediate intervention from the school administration, including psychological support for her son.

“We want the school to act fast and protect our child,” she said, urging Kenyans to exercise restraint and humanity regardless of political differences. “Politics comes and goes. We should be human enough to accommodate each other.”

Diana has since reported the issue to the school administration, with the institution promising to control the situation.
