A fire broke out at Ngao Girls Secondary School in Tarasaa Sub-County, Tana River County, on Monday, March 23 evening.
Reports indicate that an explosion was heard in one of the dormitories at approximately 7:15 PM when the students were in their classes for evening preps.
After the loud bang, flames started emanating from the dormitory,with fire spreading quickly, destroying beds, mattresses, and students’ personal belongings.
Members of the local community, alongside the school administration, responded swiftly and managed to contain the fire using available means before the arrival of the fire brigade and security agencies.
The school administration, with support from teachers and Board of Management members, has since accounted for all students, with no fatalities reported.




Confirming the incident, Tana River County Commissioner Joseph Wamuti said that a few students who sustained minor injuries were attended to at Ngao Sub-County Hospital and are in stable condition.
Relevant authorities, including the police and emergency response teams, are on site and have commenced investigations to establish the cause of the fire, while a comprehensive assessment of the damage is ongoing.
