NTSA reveals cause of Webuye-Kitale Road accident that killed 15, injured 18 others

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has released a statement after a fatal road accident that occurred on Monday, March 9 claimed the lives of 15 people at Malaha, along the Webuye-Kitale Road.

In its statement, NTSA has extended its condolences to the families and friends who lost their loved ones in the tragic accident, while wishing those injured a quick recovery.

Preliminary reports, NTSA says, indicate that two motorcycle riders travelling in opposite directions collided, resulting in both riders dying on the spot.

Tragically, a trailer from Kitale direction towards Webuye lost control upon reaching the scene of the accident, ramming into members of the public who had gathered to assist with rescue efforts.

Webuye police boss Rosemary Odeke, who was at the scene of accident yesternight, said that the trailer hit motorcycles and other vehicles before ramming into the crowd.

As a result of the incident, fifteen (15) people have since been confirmed dead, eighteen (18) others sustained serious injuries and are receiving treatment at Webuye District Hospital, while three (3) have been treated and discharged.

“Our teams have been dispatched to the scene and investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing,” the Authority says. “As these investigations continue, we urge all road users to observe traffic rules and prioritize road safety.”

NTSA expressed its regret and concern about the alarming increase in accidents on Kenyan highways. “We urge drivers to exercise utmost caution, reduce speed, and remain vigilant, especially when approaching densely populated areas.”

The Authority has also called upon members of the public and first responders at crash scenes to exercise extreme caution to prevent further loss of life.
