Delegates from Kisumu, Siaya, Migori, and Homa Bay counties have officially endorsed Siaya Senator Dr. Oburu Oginga to succeed the late Raila Odinga as leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).
The endorsement was made during a meeting at Oburu’s residence in Bondo, Siaya, where delegates unanimously backed the senator, citing his experience and leadership capabilities as key qualities for guiding the party into the future.
“Dr. Oburu Oginga is well-positioned to lead ODM and maintain the unity and stability of the party in the post-Raila era,” the delegates said.
The endorsement marks an important move in consolidating leadership within ODM following the passing of its long-serving leader, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
Party officials noted that the step is intended to strengthen internal cohesion as the party navigates a period of transition.
However, the developments come amid ongoing divisions within ODM. Observers noted that tensions were visible even during Raila Odinga’s funeral, with members expressing conflicting opinions on the party’s future direction.
One point of contention is whether ODM should remain in the Broad-based Government or chart an independent course.
Another debate revolves around whether the party should field its own presidential candidate in 2027 or align with President William Ruto, who has already emphasized his support for ODM’s unity and pledged not to let the party fracture.
